Applying for Financial Aid -- Important Tips

Student Financial Aid and Scholarships is located in the Eagle Student Services Center (see map). You may call the office directly at (940) 565-2302.

To apply for financial aid,

  1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Renewal Application.
To expedite the process, you may submit your application data electronically by using FAFSA on the web. Internet access for this purpose is available at our PC lab located in Room 136 of the Eagle Student Services Center (see map). Allow 4-6 weeks processing for FAFSA information to reach the university.

  2. Complete a UNT SUMMER APPLICATION in addition to the FAFSA or Renewal Application. The SUMMER APPLICATION is available online at www.unt.edu/finaid from early February to June 3, 2006.

  3. Submit all required documentation to our office by the priority dates (below):

    Fall /Spring applications June 1
    Spring only applications October 1
    Summer applications April 1

Students who file their application after the deadline generally will not have their funds available at fee payment. Therefore, students who file a late application will be expected to pay their own expenses and wait until their aid funds arrive to be reimbursed.

  4. Submit verification information if necessary.
If the selected data is incorrect, the processing time can easily increase by 1 - 2 months.

  5. Visit with a financial aid representative at the office front counter if you are interested in additional assistance of have questions about eligibility requirements, verification of data problems, cost of attendance calculations, etc.

The office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships is located in the Eagle Student Services Center. You may call the office directly at (940) 565-2302.

Payment/Disbursement of Financial Aid Funds

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Procedures for payment/disbursement of financial aid funds have changed.

You are highly encouraged to register during Period 1, Early Registration or at the earliest time available to you. If you are awarded financial aid for the current semester, early registration may expedite the disbursement of your funds.

Undergraduate students are required to enroll for a minimum of six (6) hours (half time) to be paid financial aid.
Graduate students are required to be enrolled for a minimum of four (4) hours to be paid financial aid.

Student loan funds will be requested from your lender for disbursement to your student account when class attendance in the summer session(s) that establishes half-time enrollment begins (6 hours for undergraduates; 4 hours for graduate students).
Students enrolled in Internet classes are required to adhere to class attendance requirements as defined by the university in addition to the six (6) hours of enrollment. Disbursement of financial aid funds to undergraduates will be posted to an account when class attendance in six (6) hours of enrollment (half time) begins and when four (4) hours of enrollment begins for graduate students.

Receipt of student loan funds for first-year borrowers will be delayed until 30 (thirty) calendar days into the first (1st) session of attendance has been reached.
Check myUNT “My To Do List” to verify and finalize any pending items.
Student awards can be “accepted” or “declined” on myUNT at my.unt.edu.

If Your Financial Aid Does Not Cover Your Tuition and Fees

If the total of your Anticipated Aid does not cover your full tuition and fee balance, arrangements for the difference must be made in Student Accounting and University Cashiering Services to prevent your class from being dropped. Anticipated Aid is financial and/or scholarships you have “Accepted” on myUNT, excluding Federal Work Study, Parent Loans, College Access Loans, and Alternative Loans. You must pay any outstanding balance, regardless of whether your financial aid or scholarship proceeds are available at that time.
