  5. Q: What is the status of my award? Where is my money? How do I find out if my financial aid is here yet?
A: Check your status online! Access award and disbursement information through myUNT.

  6. Q: How do I get a grant?
A: Grants are available to students who have financial need, which is determined by the federal processors when a student fills out the FAFSA. Grants are limited and are offered on a first come-first serve basis.

  7. Q: How can I get more aid now that my situation has changed?
A: We do realize that situations may change during the academic year or from year to year. We have special circumstances forms available in our office for students to pick up. Those should be returned to the financial aid office filled out completely and with the requested documentation.

  8. Q: Why was I selected for verification?
A: The federal processor selects one in every three students to be verified. It is their check and balance system to make sure the information student’s are putting on their applications is correct and accurate. Applicants are randomly selected to help ensure the soundness of present and future financial aid programs.

  9. Q: What is the next step?
A: The best way to find out your next step in processing is to to visit My Financial Aid, and choose Next Step in Processing.

  10. Q: When will I go through the award process ? How much aid will I receive for the school year?
A: Your eligibility is determined by the information you provided on your FAFSA. Once we review the information and make the award, we will notify you through the mail with a Financial Aid Notice. For more information on the Financial Aid Process, visit Important Financial Aid Information.

  11. Q: Where do I pick up my refund check?
A: Checks are no longer available to be picked up from Student Accounting and University Cashiering Services. Students and parents can sign up for e-Refund to have refunds directly deposited into their designated bank account. If a student does not sign up for e-Refund, a physical refund check will be mailed out to the student from Student Accounting and University Cashiering Services. For more information on refunds, please visit the Student Accounting and University Cashiering Services website.

  12. Q: How do I request additional financial aid?
A: You can contact our office by phone or in person to request a review of your file. A counselor will be notified of your request and will determine if you are eligible for any more aid.

  13. Q: How long does it take for my loan money to get here?
A: After the bank receives the first two copies of your promissory note, it takes them approximately 5 to 7 business days to send the money here. However, since institutions may vary in processing time, we recommend you contact your lender.

  14. Q: How do I apply for financial aid?
A: Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and mail to the federal processor. For scholarships, you need to fill out the General Academic Scholarship Application.

  15. Q: When do I need to apply for financial aid?
A: You can find the Priority Dates for applying at Important Financial Aid Information.

  16. Q: Can I/Do I need to set up an appointment?
A: Counselors and counselor assistants are available M-F, 8-5 at our first and second level locations to assist you, no appointment necessary.

  17. Q: How do I know when my loan is here?
A: Your lender requires 5-10 business days to process your application. Check with the financial aid office after confirming your lender has received the application.

  18. Q: Must I choose a lender from your lender list?
A: No, any lending institution who participates in the Stafford program can be selected.

  19. Q: How do I fill out this form (EN/Loan Apps) and where do I turn it in?
A: MAKE SURE TO FILL OUT FORMS COMPLETELY TO AVOID DELAY.

  20. EN: Check accept/reject for every award offered. Fill out other resources form if receiving funds (scholarships/ waivers/alt loans) that are not indicated on the EN. If requesting and/or accepting loans: indicate a lender code. Sign the back of the reply copy, and return to UNT FAO.

LOAN APP: Write two full references and sign/date in the spaces provided. Send top two copies to lender indicated and third copy to UNT SFAS. If you make any changes at all to address or lower the certified amount you must initial by each change.

  21. Q: If I get married after I file the FAFSA can I change my dependency status?
A: Not for the current award year. When you file your FAFSA for the next award year you will then file as married.

  22. Q: I want to file as an independent student. My parents do not claim me on their tax return and I do not live with them.
A: Your dependency status is determined by the 6 questions on the FAFSA in Step Two. Whether or not your parents claim you as a dependent on their 1040 tax return does not determine your dependency status. Whether or not you actually live in your parents' home does not determine your dependency status.

  23. Q: How much financial aid can I receive?
A: Your maximum eligibility for your grade level and dependency status, up to the estimated cost of attendance. Maximum eligibility is determined from your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) data.

  24. Q: What does capitalization mean?
A: If you have a loan that is unsubsidized, with interest accruing, you have the choice to start paying the interest only while you are enrolled as a student. You may also choose to have the interest capitalized, or added to, the principle of your loan. When you graduate, you will start paying back the principal and interest on the loan.

  25. Q: What is College Work Study and how does it work?
A: If you accept this offer, you need to go to Student Employment on the third floor of the Union and see which jobs interest you and work with your class schedule. You will make an appointment for an interview. If hired, you will work on campus between classes and you will be paid from the Federal Work Study funds available to you, not to exceed $2000 each semester. You will not see this money up front; you will earn it throughout the semester. You are not required to pay back these funds.

  26. Q: If I reject my PLUS loan (parent loan) offer, can I be awarded additional loan funds?
A: If you are a dependent student and you have been offered a parent loan, the parent loan must be denied by a lending institution before you will be eligible to receive additional unsubsidized loans. Rejecting the parent loan stops the process of the parent loan and you cannot be awarded an additional unsubsidized loan.
