Scholarships Overview
The following information is provided regarding scholarships administered by Student Financial Aid and Scholarships.
You will find that most scholarships at UNT for entering freshmen are administered by Student Financial Aid and Scholarships. UNT provides a limited number of renewable scholarships awarded on a first-come, first-served basis to students who are in the top 10 percent of their high school class at the time of admission to UNT and score at least 1200 on the SAT or 27 on the ACT (written portion excluded).
Students transferring from a Texas community or junior college may be eligible for a limited number of transfer scholarships awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
The majority of scholarships for continuing students are awarded in academic departments. Check with the department of your major for additional details. Entering and continuing students may also apply for a number of scholarships using the online General Academic Scholarship Application. Graduate students typically apply for scholarships in the Toulouse School of Graduate Studies.
Keep in mind that many students compete for scholarships, and the availability of scholarship funding is affected by factors such as the state economy and the stock market's performance. We highly recommend you apply as early as possible.
Important News for National Merit Finalists
National Merit Finalists are eligible for a UNT Meritorious Scholarship. The scholarship is offered to a limited number of qualified applicants each year. It includes several benefits:
- full tuition and mandatory fees as defined in the tuition and fees brochure (student service fees, student union fees, technical use fees, medical fees, international education fees, ID card fees and publication fees)
- an on-campus residence hall room (double occupancy) or the average cost of university housing
- a standard meal plan
- admittance to the Honors College
- priority consideration for honors housing in a residence hall

General Information
Non-Texas residents who are awarded a competitive scholarship by a University of North Texas Scholarship Committee, officially recognized by the administration and approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board under criteria developed by the board, of at least $1,000 for the academic year or summer for which they are enrolled, are eligible to pay Texas-resident fees and charges. Scholarships not awarded by UNT through their competitive scholarship process are not eligible to pay Texas-resident fees and charges.

How to Apply
You may compete for undergraduate and graduate scholarships by completing the online General Academic Scholarship application. Graduate students should contact Graduate Admissions for additional scholarship opportunities. Access the graduate school online at www.gradschool.unt.edu.
Application Deadlines
Continuing students should contact the department of their major to obtain information about departmental scholarships. Application deadlines for these scholarships vary by department. Applications for General Academic Scholarships are available beginning in the fall for the following academic year. The application deadline is March 1. The selection of recipients is highly competitive and based on availability of funding for each academic year. Please be sure you apply by the March 1 deadline.

Private organizations such as parents' employers, fraternal organizations, and business and professional groups can often provide other sources of financial aid. Keep in mind that scholarships are considered when calculating the amount of other financial aid you can receive.
